UPDATED: Sen. Byrd Hospitalized

Sorry for another short post, but information is a bit scarce so far. Olbermann was the first (and so far, only) one with the story so far.  Apparently, he had a high fever and reported feeling lethargic.  He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.  No one seems to have any information on his condition yet , but I'll update as more information comes in.  Let's keep him in our thoughts and prayers.

Senator Byrd (D-WV) is 90.  He is the longest serving senator in American history, having joined the Senate in 1959. During his tenure, he has been majority leader twice, minority leader and majority whip once each, and is the current president pro tempore of the Senate (the third in the presidential succession line, after Cheney and Pelosi).

UPDATE: No new info to support, but for those of you unfamiliar with Sen. Byrd, here's a link to his recent statements ripping into Cheney.

UPDATE 2: The Hill has the story, as does MSNBC. Apparently, he will be held overnight for observation, but still no word on Sen. Byrd's condition. This is the third time this year that Byrd has been hospitalized.

UPDATE 3: If anybody still needs a reason not to vote Republican in November, check out the jubilation in Freeperville. Sickening. I nominate this Freeper for the coveted "Republican Asshole of the Year Trophy":
Dang...first the Cape Cod orca, now “Sheets?” The Senate may be back in Repub hands before too long at this rate.

Sen. Byrd is one of my personal heroes. His story shows that people can change for the better. He's come a long, long way from his youth in the KKK to being one of the greatest progressives voices our country has ever known. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

Re: Two of Obama's (none / 0)

Are you suggesting, therefore, some kind of conspiracy from the Clintons?

Because if so, that's pretty sick, dude.

I don't think he was suggesting that. (none / 0)

I think he was just pointing out what I myself was thinking--earlier today we get the good news that Sen. Kennedy came through surgery just fine, and now this?

Wouldn't it be nice if there were no rhetorical questions?

Get Well Soon (none / 0)

I will forever hold him in the highest regard for his amazing speech against the AUMF.  That speech summed up everything that, in my mind, was wrong with the current administration and the sad abdication of responsibility the senate and house were showing.

The passage of the AUMF, for me, is probably the saddest day in the history of the US in my lifetime and those who had the courage and conviction to stand against that measure will always hold a special place in my heart.

Get well soon Senator Byrd.

Robert C Byrd hospitalized and Ted Kennedy recovering from a brain operation.

Daniel Inouye(HI) may be the Senate President pro Tempore.

Very worrisome... (none / 0)

I hope this isn't anything major, but it's troubling, considering his age.

My thoughts and prayers are with both Senator Byrd and Senator Kennedy.  Two rocks of the Senate!  We need their wisdom more than ever in our government!  Get well soon!

Re: UPDATED: Sen. Byrd Hospitalized (none / 0)

While West Virginia may be loaded with Reagan Democrats (racists), Byrd's recent support of Obama suggests to me that he has repented enough for his early days as a KKK supporter. People can change, and in the past 60 years, the country has also changed.

Byrd's Obama endorsement may be his last act of repentence.

We believe.
